Vista Ridge rebuilds summer operations with innovative new activities

The Fort McMurray fire delayed last summer’s ongoing capital plans at Vista Ridge as the team spent the summer repairing the extensive damages to the resort in time for the winter season.

Vista Ridge seized the opportunity to implement new design concepts and emerging trends such as a 12-hole golf course with oversized cups and a parkour park.  Golf course construction is now underway with clearing and grubbing completed over the winter months. CTC Golf and Turf have now mobilized the course construction, which is slated to open in 2018. The new mini putt course opened in early July and Vista is hoping to launch the kids outdoor parkour park, zip line and bike skills park later this summer.

As the region continues to come to terms with the massive rebuilding project Vista Ridge’s summer activities will give families more recreational opportunities.

DBC Long-Term Strategic Planning

CWSAA and ski marketing committee mebers from around the BC  joined with Destination BC and their creative agencies in a 2018/19 & Beyond Ski Marketing planning session last Friday in Richmond BC.

CWSAA has two active industry-led marketing committees.  Tom Rosner of RCR chairs the BC committee, Derek Look of Rabbit Hill and Simon Moffatt of Mt.Norquay co-chair the Go Ski Alberta initiative.

Coquihalla Box Canyon Construction

Construction is looking good on the new eastbound Box Canyon chain up area just below the snowshed on the Coquihalla Highway.  Last winter CWSAA reported that the chain up area would be expanded significantly to hold up to 80 semi trucks.  The highway alignment is being shifted west to allow for the space.  Plus full washrooms are being installed.  More space will make it easier for skiers to travel in winter by reducing the number of commercial trucks blocking lanes on snowshed hill.  The new Box Canyon area allows more trucks to chain up below the snowshed and off the highway.  Thanks Ministry of Transportation.

Places & Faces

Congratulations to Janet Hink, who recently took over as General Manager at Mount Sima (Yukon).

Sunridge in Edmonton has been busy installing a (new to them) Leitner Poma Quad chair.  The new chair will replace two t-bars as well as open up additional terrain.  A new 300 ft carpet lift will also be added as part of the expansion. See more about Sunridge’s exciting expansion.

Mount Joy Snow Resort continues to make snow making improvements. Club President Ray Tatro explains the summer ahead in the Lloydminster Source. JJ McColm also notes that the additions to date made positive impacts to the quality of conditions and duration of the season.

Don Williams at Mission Ridge proudly reports that they are hosting their first Mud Sweat & Tears event.  Third party event organizers appreciate ski areas as venues as they provide important infrastructure such as parking and amenities like F&B outlets – Read More about Adventure Race opportunities.

Trail running is growing throughout the continent.  Many ski areas have recognized their lift infrastructure and alpine trails appeal to this market.  The trail running community also has its own dedicated media and events. Matt Mosteller is excited to share that trail running has expanded at Kicking Horse (Golden) with new sections and great enhancements.  Kicking Horse is home to the 3-day Golden Ultra in September – one of Canada’s biggest trail running events, which is organized by Magi Scallion, a familar face in cross-country skiing.

Freefall at Winsport is a new eight-storey platform unlike any bungee-jumping or sky-diving experience. Guest step off the platform for a  36-feet of free falling before being slowed down by the magnetic braking component that gently catches and lowers you to the ground.

SilverStar opened the ‘Beowulf’ Mountain Bike 35km+ xc trail last weekend, a project 4 years in the making.

Take a look at the epic trail in their launch video and the Beowulf webpage.

Congratulations to Whistler Blackcomb and Vail Resorts for making an epic commitment of zero net operating footprint by 2030.  Read more.
