Mount Washington Alpine Resort is Vancouver Island's premiere ski destination, with summer operations including mountain biking and a new zipline attraction.  We are in search of a dynamic, creative ski industry professional to lead our Maintenance and Facilities area.  The Job Description is as follows:

The Director of Maintenance & Facilities provides leadership, management and direction for the resort maintenance and facilities team. This is a critical role, providing safe and well-maintained equipment and buildings. Ensuring that jobs are completed efficiently and within regulatory guidelines, projected deadlines and on budget. They are directly responsible to ensure the overall success of the company associated with the following; accountability for daily maintenance and utility operations, future planning, strategizing on improvements within their departments, employee satisfaction and performance, staff development, financial results which include expense and labor management in accordance with budget requirements, and compliance with all governmental regulations.

  • Water & Waste Plant Utilities
  • Snow Removal


Purpose of the Position:

  • Hire, train, coach, mentor, and evaluate the maintenance supervision team
  • Create, monitor and manage departmental budgets and business plans
  • Plan and implement projects identified in maintenance and major project budgets
  • Work closely with the Director of Finance in building, monitoring and adjusting annual plans as required
  • Ensure that the TSBC, OH&S programs meet compliance
  • Provide environmental stewardship within the borders of MWAR property
  • Be responsible for Work Safe BC issues and policies
  • Find ways to improve maintenance efficiencies throughout the resort
  • Be responsible for all utility services, including planning, maintaining and compliance



  • Maintain budget goals within the respective departments for which you are responsible
  • Identifying savings in all aspects of your budgets and manage accordingly
  • Manage water rate planning and implementation
  • Monitor machine costs, work with the Director of Finance to plan future equipment upgrades and purchases
  • Maintain good staff morale through communication, strong mentoring and ongoing training
  • Develop and manage a robust preventative maintenance plan for all departments within your scope of responsibilities
  • Find efficiencies to reduce overall costs within the outlined maintenance departments
  • Develop snow removal plan and strategies to deliver well maintained parking lots and safe walking conditions
  • Keep your trades and provide career paths for the “keepers!”


Standards of Performance:

  • Meet specific and annual objectives and performance standards set by the General Manager
  • Reduce and minimize lost-time, injuries and equipment damage
  • Maintain and increase scores on key employee opinion survey categories for all departments within your scope of responsibilities



  • 10 years’ experience in managing people and projects
  • Possession of, or familiarity with, a trade ticket (plumbing, electrical, millwright, etc.)
  • 2 years’ experience running potable water and waste water facility management
  • Familiarity with maintenance and heavy equipment
  • 5 years’ experience as a high-level decision maker in a large organization
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Expertise in negotiating contracts and agreements
  • Good understanding of TSBC regulations, Work Safe BC & Occupational Health and Safety
  • Proven leadership skills in a resort setting
