Position Overview:

The Heavy-Duty Mechanic works as part of the Vehicle Maintenance team.  He/She is responsible for maintaining all vehicles, snow cats, various on-site small engine equipment and tools and equipment. They are also responsible for assisting with the supervision and training of apprentices, completing work orders, inventory management (stocking, ordering, etc.) upkeep of the shop, assisting on town run and garbage duties when needed and assisting with the proper use of fuel dispensing equipment.


Job Duties/Responsibilities:


Maintenance of:

  • Road Vehicles (plow truck, busses, construction equipment, crew cabs)
  • Tracked and earth moving vehicles (snow mobiles, side by sides, backhoe)
  • Snow cats and implements
  • Ski Lift and Chalet Auxiliary Power Units
  • Routine maintenance and repairs to small engine equipment on site (i.e. pumps, compressors, brushers, chainsaws etc.)
  • Hand and shop tools and equipment.



  • Answer radios or telephones promptly to ensure open communication to vehicle maintenance department
  • Ensure all work orders are submitted fully completed and accurate
  • Ensure shop area is kept clean and shop tools returned to their proper locations
  • Supervise apprentices to ensure safe work practices and efficiency while progressing through the apprenticeship
  • Assist with snow removal when required
  • Assist in emergency situations
  • Assist in the monitoring of operator equipment log sheets and reviewing comments
  • Assist with the proper training of equipment/vehicle operators as required
  • Assist with the proper use of the fuel dispensing equipment and the training of
    operators/drivers in the use of this equipment, recording of fuel transactions etc.
  • Inventory auditing duties (seasonal)
  • Assist in garbage removal or parking if required
  • Assist
    in town runs and deliveries if required
  • Assist parking cars and buses when required
  • Point out any safety concerns which would put an employee in an unsafe situation



  • Respect and adhere to the company’s policies and procedures as set in the “Corporate
    Policies”, “Employee Handbook”
     and “Safety Operations Training Manuals”
  • Understand and adhere to Ski Marmot Basin’s “Harassment Policy” and the company’s “Privacy Policy”.




  • Journeyman Certification in Heavy Duty or Automotive Mechanic trade (apprentices considered)
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license with Air Endorsement Certificate
  • Any other specialized training in hydraulics, electrical, etc.
  • Ski industry experience an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly
  • Cheerful, outgoing personality; demonstrated temperament and disposition for highly
    stressful situations 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of risk management principles
  • Physically fit.

  • Must have basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Internet)
  • Excellent communication skills; both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a safe and efficient manner while being aware of all hazards in the work environment

  • Capable of working inside or outside, ability to multi-task
  • First Aid training is an asset
  • Ski Industry experience is an asset.

  • Able to use taught skills and previous experience to problem solve
  • Recreational mountain pursuits, such as rock climbing, and ski touring, are considered assets.
