Employee Safety Spotlight: Stack your Snack

‘Tis the season, when our snowy playgrounds are about to get extra busy.  That means, our staff are working extra hard and long days – so a focus on nutrition is key to keep your team fueled and reduce injuries.  When blood sugar fluctuates, reflexes are slowed, information is not integrated as well, decision making is impaired and the risk of injury is increased.  Proper nutrition and hydration are key components of being Fit for Duty.

In this month’s Safety Spotlight, find some tips and recipes to power through the holidays.  When eating right, you’ll be more alert, your reflexes will work better and your mood will stay more positive.

Have you got a young leader who champions safety at your ski area?  Be sure to nominate them for CWSAA’s newest award – the go2HR Young Safety Mogul Award.  Nominations will be accepted until January 9.

CWSAA’s Commitment to Responsible Stewardship

Ski areas are committed to their responsibility of land stewardship, and are taking increasing strides to reduce their footprints and complement operations with the land.

Over the winter we’ll be sharing articles with examples from ski areas on how they are providing leading examples on responsible stewardship.  These articles are intended to provide ski areas with ideas, that will be valuable in implementing new practices at your resort.

This month’s focus is on Composting and Waste Reduction: Read More.

SnowProud

The CSC has prepared resources to help raise funds for SnowProud.  Find the resources HERE.

Please use these resources to help spread the word. All of the money raised from SnowProud goes towards funding community initiatives to help more Canadians have access to snowsports.

Places & Faces

Kudos to Marmot Basin and Edmonton Ski Club for their partnership.  Marmot Basin has partnered with Edmonton Ski Club to sponsor the re-opening event on December 26.  There will be free skiing for kids during the event, and Marmot Basin instructors will be on site helping introduce first-timers to the sport.  Marmot has also been providing guidance to Edmonton Ski Club throughout their re-opening process.

CWSAA and the industry were saddened by the passing of Jake Burton in November.  Jake was a visionary, a leader, an icon. Our deepest condolences to the Burton family.  Read More from Burton.

Congratulations to the team at Pass Powderkeg on the launch of their Lions Den Yurt.  The new facility will be home to the ski areas cubs program – for children 18 months to 6 years old.

Congratulations to acting GM Jesse Crawford and the team at Sasquatch Mountain Resort.  Their new Leitner Poma conveyor loading quad will open this weekend.  It is the first of its kind in BC and will move 1800 passengers per hour dramatically increasing the uphill capacity at the Fraser Valley ski area.

In addition to the best racers in the world, the Lake Louise World Cup also attracted some of our own industry leaders.  Pictured here at the World Cup at Lake Louise earlier this month is Kim Locke, Andre Quenneville and Pete Bosinger.

The Hon. Doug Donaldson is the Minister responsible for Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. The Mountain Resort Branch resides within this ministry and provides oversight for the BC ski industry.  The Minister is a supporter and has always been willing to engage.  He is personally familiar with the industry as a skier at his local mountain – Hudson Bay near Smithers.   As an industry that employs nearly 30,000 people in the west, a recent CWSAA delegation shared with the minister opportunities to stimulate growth especially in rural communities…the first item of business however was a review of the day’s report citing the fresh powder at the North Shore mountains.

GM Peter Nielsen and the mayor were on hand to open the new Stellar chair at Revelstoke Mountain Resort. The Leitner Poma quad opens up mid mountain novice terrain and gives skiers better access to Rippers Quad from the gondola and reduces pressure on the Stoke Chair.

Manning Park‘s new Doppelmayr Quad chair – the Bear Chair – is set to open this weekend.  With 19 cm of fresh snow (in the past 48 hours), and lots more in the forecast it’s set to be a very exciting opening weekend for the BC resort.

Congratulations to Big White. At the 2019 Canadian Tourism Awards, Big White was awarded the Pursuit Attraction & Adventure Award.  Read More.
