Creating a Safety Culture

Workplace safety is a priority for the Ski Industry.  There are many great examples at ski areas, who have created effective initiatives to support a safety culture in their workplace.  This month, Whistler Blackcomb is sharing their employee recognition program Caught S.A.F.E. Read more about it in The Canada West Way.

National Ski & Snowboard Day #NSSD

Thank you to everyone that participated and supported National Ski & Snowboard Day! The event was a great success, with over 1800 participating.  If you weren’t able to redeem all of your tickets, please make sure to enter them into the E4CliTrx software no later than February 6th.

We also noted a huge increase in #SnowProud social posts from the West this weekend – keep up the momentum in spreading the joy of snowsports!  Thanks to the CSC for sending us these awesome #SnowProud toques.

Winter Board Meeting

Ted, Andre & Peter skiing at Kimberley.

The CWSAA Board of Directors met in January at Kimberley Alpine Resort.  Thanks to Ted Funston and the team at Kimberley for ensuring the Board of Directors hit the slopes for some ‘chair lift meetings.’

Among many other topics, the Board advanced its work on CWSAA’s new strategic directives that include:

  • Safety & Risk Management is considered a foundational part of the proactive efforts of CWSAA, which aims to promote best practices and education to continually improve staff and guest safety and minimize industry risk.
  • Sustainable Market Growth: Growth in snowsport participation is essential to the viability of ski areas. CWSAA will enable opportunities to help mountain and river valley ski areas grow visits and realize sustainable profitability, including new snowsport market segments, product development, and spring, summer and fall diversification.
  • Government Advocacy will position and advance the interests of ski areas in Western Canada, particularly with respect to federal and provincial laws, regulations and policy.
  • People & Talent Development: CWSAA will help industry with attracting, retaining, and training passionate people to become future leaders of our industry – ski areas, associate members and wider partners alike.

The exciting new content of the Spring Conference is a direct reflection of the directives identified by the board.

Check out some of the highlights from our visit to Kimberley in The Canada West Way.

New Industry Stats & the Ski Industry Story

Sharing the story of the ski industry is a constant objective of CWSAA.  For the $2.1 billion Western Canadian ski industry to continue to contribute to our communities and economy, government needs to know why they should care about the industry.  To achieve this, CWSAA relies on the vision and participation of ski areas to provide data, and the expertise of our partners, Ecosign Mountain Planners and Align Research, to consolidate the information.  Check out the new stats and contribution that ski makes, in The Canada West Way.

Ramping up Recruitment

go2HR (BC’s tourism human resource association) has secured advertising spots on Global TV to promote jobs in BC’s tourism industry. From February 11 to March 3, these ads will be on Global BC and BC 1 as well as social media.

How do you take advantage of this amount of exposure? Post on go2HR’s free, tourism-only job board! The ads will point viewers to visit the go2HR Job Board.  This would be the perfect opportunity to increase awareness for your company and recruit for your summer or permanent positions.  Find out more.
