The 2018-19 season has now drawn to a close and the 51st Annual CWSAA Spring Conference is over.  Member’s can download a copy of our annual report in the Member’s Only section (login required).

The 2019 Spring Conference and Trade Show had one of the largest attendances ever.  There were 582 people in attendance from 176 businesses and ski areas.  107 people were first-time attendees! 70 Trade Show booths sold out quickly, 2 keynote speakers, 57 sessions/courses were offered and the first-ever women’s networking event took place.

Thanks to donations, 40 items were sold at the auction, providing $9085 towards the Small Areas Assistance Fund.  A big thank you to all the presenters, sponsors and contributors to the conference.

Places & Faces

It is with great sadness to hear of the passing of Lorne Borgal.  Lorne died in a small airplane crash near Smithers early Saturday morning. Lorne was an icon in the ski industry as CEO of Whistler Mountain and had also been instrumental in setting up Blackcomb. He later moved on to become CEO of Horseshoe Valley and Calibogie Ski Areas in Ontario, and was President and CEO of Hudsons Bay Mountain in Smithers, from 2005 to 2014. Along with an MBA degree from Stanford University that brought his significant professionalism to the industry, Lorne also contributed his love of skiing and as a volunteer ski patroller.

Big White will hold the first World Cup Snowboardcross in Canada since 2013.  The Barrels & Berms Snowboardcross will take place from Jan 20 -27, 2020.

Eastlink Park in Whitecourt Alberta is preparing to install a Tbar this summer.  The lift is just over 1000 ft long and will access the west area of the ski area.

Andre Quenneville competed (and WON) the Masters Bozo cup last month, 8 weeks after tearing his MCL.  The race was particularly special, as he did it in a suit that was formerly worn by both Jimmie Spencer and Marc Giradelli.

Congratulations to Warren Sparks who is a 2019 CSA Group Award of Merit recipient. The CSA Group Award of Merit recognizes individuals who, through their leadership, have fostered the development and advancement of standards, both nationally and internationally.  Warren has spent many years on both the Z98 Passenger Ropeways and C22.1-18 Electrical code committees.

The Dewar family celebrated 30 years at Stony Mountain this season.  Stony capped off the year with their annual Slush Cup!

Congratulations to Jason Paterson, who has been named as the incoming President and CEO of Marmot Basin, once Dave Gibson retires at the end of June.   Jason has been Marmot’s VP, Operations and Maintenance since 2012 and has also been a member of CWSAA Board of Directors since 2014.
