SROAM Advisory Committee

Selkirk College has several scholarships for students within the Ski Resort Operations and Management program. This includes four established through a CWSAA endowment fund.  Recipients are selected by GPA and are full-time SROAM students attending their second year.

The SROAM Industry Advisory Committee met with instructors and students on September 24 & 25 in Nelson, BC.  The committee was established to ensure the outcomes of the 2 year diploma matches industry needs.

Michael Pringle, Noah Patton, Ethan Goldstein and Benjamin Whitton received the 2017 CWSAA Scholarships.

Of the many topics reviewed, recruitment into the SROAM program and subsequent laddering into the industry occupied the most attention.  Discussions revealed numerous easy to execute opportunities to benefit ski area staffing efforts.  Several ski areas regard SROAM as a primary target for recruitment which can include direct visits and presentations to the students.  Some areas also link post-graduation employment to practicums and tuition incentives.

The committee will consider some additional structure recommendations to practicums in the coming term for the benefit of ski areas and students.  Ski areas are encouraged to include SROAM in their job posting distribution lists, and are welcomed to contact the college regarding recruitment.

Go Ski Alberta

Travel Alberta has approved the 2017/18 funding application for Go Ski Alberta.  The program focuses on growing awareness of Alberta’s Ski Areas and growing participation in the sport.

We hope to have 100% participation from Alberta Ski Areas again this year, so please be sure to return your commitment form by October 16.  Please contact Cynthia [email protected] for information.

CWSAA welcomes two new Associate Members this month: Ski Hill Mulcher and Manitoba Freestyle.

Alberta Labour Market Partnerships

CWSAA recently met with Director Geoff Perry, and Officer Lisa Beaudry, of the Employer Programs and Industry Partnerships Division within the Alberta Ministry of Labour.  The discussion emphasized the geographic and economic diversity of the tourism and ski industry in the province.  The meeting also focused on the challenge many regions in the province experience in recruiting employees.

Please find linked here a list of resources offered to employers, including a Labour Market Partnership program that the industry may consider.  The ASM fall meeting provides an opportunity to discuss these opportunities on a regional or provincial basis.
