Job Overview:

Castle Mountain Resort is seeking a skilled and experienced Avalanche Forecasting Supervisor to lead our forecasting program and ensure safe daily operations within the Mountain Safety Department. Working closely with the Mountain Safety Manager and Mountain Safety Supervisor, you will play a key role in risk assessment, mitigation strategies, and team development. Castle Mountain’s Mountain Safety Department provides:

·      Uniform, including jacket, pants and backpack
·      Annual Skills Update for PEAK Certification

Responsibilities:

·      Overseeing the avalanche forecasting program, including avalanche control and explosives program
·      Fulfilling role of lead forecaster within avalanche forecasting program
·      Collecting, organizing and analyzing weather, avalanche, and snowpack observations
·      Developing and updating policies and procedures, primarily related to the avalanche forecasting program
·      Assist with establishment of avalanche forecasting program for planned terrain expansion for the season
·      Providing leadership in all aspects of the Mountain Safety Department operations
·      Assisting with hiring, training, mentorship, and appraisals
·      Working collaboratively with all departments to ensure safe and efficient mountain operations
·      Ensuring Mountain Safety Department operates at industry standards, and follows all policies/procedures
·      Fulfilling Team Lead and / or Incident Commander role during lift evacuations
·      Fulfilling Team Lead and / or Incident Commander role during avalanche rescue
·      Providing on-hill rescue and first aid
·      Identifying and mitigating hazards; installing and maintaining signage and rope lines
·      Other duties, as required

Qualifications:

·      Advanced first aid (80-hour) with CPR-HCP
·      CAA Avalanche Operations Level 2
·      CAA Avalanche Professional Membership
·      Alberta Blaster’s Permit, or eligible for one
·      Expert skiing ability and capable of skiing steep slopes in challenging conditions
·      Physically fit and able to ski with heavy loads (30+ lbs)
·      Capable of working outdoors in all weather conditions
·      Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
·      CAA Introduction to Snow Avalanche Mapping course would be considered an asset
·      CAA Avalanche Operations Level 3 would be considered an asset

Work Experience:

·      8-10 years in the avalanche industry, with 5+ years in an avalanche forecasting role
·      Supervisory experience would be considered an asset

Work Conditions:

·      Outdoor work in all weather conditions
·      Skiing steep terrain in all snow conditions
·      Skiing with backpacks up to 30-40lbs
·      Lifting objects up to 50lbs
