Over 500 delegates gathered at the Penticton Trade & Convention Centre for the 2025 CWSAA Spring Conference, marking a week of collaboration, learning, and recognition within the ski industry. A highlight of the conference was the Awards Dinner, where we honoured individuals who have made significant contributions to our community.
Jimmie Spencer Lifetime Achievement Award
This prestigious award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and service to the ski industry. In 2025, the award was posthumously presented to three remarkable individuals:
Roger McCarthy
With a career in the industry spanning over 50 years, Roger held key leadership positions in major ski companies across North America and beyond, including Whistler Blackcomb and Mt. Tremblant. Known for his relentless pursuit of excellence, he inspired teams to enhance guest experiences and mentored countless individuals, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
Al Raine
A visionary leader, Al’s contributions spanned from his early work as BC’s first Ski Area Coordinator to his pivotal roles in developing Whistler and Sun Peaks. As Sun Peaks’ first mayor, he championed the philosophy that “to be a great resort, you first need to become a great community,” fostering a sense of belonging in every place he helped build.
Peter Schumann
Remembered for his deep commitment to the ski industry, Peter’s expertise in operations and mentorship influenced many. His leadership at Big White Ski Resort and dedication to guest service and innovation set high standards that continue to guide the industry today.
Jim Marshall Leadership Award
This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional skills and dedication to their profession, making meaningful contributions to the sport of recreational skiing.
Andy Cohen: General Manager of Fernie Alpine Resort, Andy has been a steadfast leader in the ski industry. As a past Chair of the CWSAA Board of Directors and an active member of the Government Relations Committee, his commitment to excellence has significantly advanced the sector’s growth and innovation.
Rod Chisholm Operations & Maintenance Award
Established in memory of Rod Chisholm, this award honours individuals who have provided immense contributions and knowledge in ski area operations and lift maintenance. Recipients are widely regarded for their expertise and often serve as indispensable members of senior management teams within ski areas.
Paul Harkins: Director of Maintenance and Facilities at Grouse Mountain Resorts, Paul was recognized for his extensive expertise in lift operations and infrastructure. His leadership has been instrumental in maintaining and upgrading critical systems, ensuring safety and reliability for guests and staff alike.
Lars Fossberg Excellence Award
Presented annually to a manager or supervisor who exhibits a high degree of initiative and creativity, this award acknowledges individuals who demonstrate perseverance and talent, encouraging them to contribute to industry leadership in the coming years.
Christy Allan: Director of Sales, Marketing, and Guest Services at the Sea to Sky Gondola, Christy was honoured for her creativity, resilience, and behind-the-scenes leadership. Her innovative approaches to guest engagement and crisis management have significantly contributed to the gondola’s success and community presence.
CWSAA Peak Performance Awards
This award celebrates individuals whose concepts, ideas, or contributions have provided value to their employer and benefited the industry. Each year, the CWSAA Board of Directors presents the Peak Performance Award to several deserving recipients nominated by their peers.
