These are the new four strategic directions that will guide CWSAA initiatives for the next three years.
The CWSAA Board of Directors met on June 11 & 12 for its summer Board meeting and strategic planning workshop. Survey input from members and directors identified the areas that CWSAA should focus to benefit the industry. The Board, including new Chair Andre Quenneville and new Director Kim Locke, shaped this information into the four directives above.
CWSAA activities will align with these directives and complement the core deliverables of the association such as conferences, communication, and risk management best practices. More information will be shared in the next newsletter.

Tourism Week
[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]1.8 million Canadians depend on economic activity within the visitor economy (a.k.a. tourism). Global tourism revenues are growing, and we must convey the economic and social benefits of our industry to government and public in order to ensure a regulatory framework for Canada to seize the opportunity. The ski industry in western Canada generated revenues of $900 million dollars and is responsible for visitor spending of double that figure. Small Areas assistance fund applications to attend Fall meetings should be submitted by July 31.

Mountain Bike Workshop Survey
As more ski areas diversify with summer operations, a CWSAA working group of ski areas is investigating member interest in a 1-day lift-accessed mountain biking workshop that may be scheduled with the BCY Division meeting this fall. The following survey seeks to identify the most valuable topic areas of interest to potential attendees.

Ministers Tourism Council
There will be great resort and sport representation on the new Minister’s Tourism Engagement Council. Steve Paccagnan (Panorama Mountain Resort and CWSAA past-Chair), Brad Harrison (Backcountry Lodges Association, and chair of the Adventure Tourism Coalition), Marsha Walden (DBC), Glenn Manziuk (TOTA), and others will sit on this new provincial council to help guide strategic directions for tourism in BC. Minimum Wage
Alberta – Effective Oct 1, 2018, Alberta’s minimum wage will increase to $15/hour. This increase is the second scheduled increase, the first being Oct 1, 2017 which brought minimum wage to the current $13.60. Read More..
BC – Effective June 1, 2018, the general minimum wage in BC increased to $12.65, whereas the liquor server minimum wage increased to $11.40. This is the first of four annual increases that will take effect on June 1 of each year. WorkSafeBC Safety Bulletin for Heli-Ski Guides
Heli-ski guides may be exposed to hazardous noise levels. Regular exposure to sounds above 85 decibels (dBA) can cause permanent hearing loss, and helicopters can produce noise levels much higher than that. Guides are required to wear ski helmets and hearing protection – and some types of hearing protection can be uncomfortable to wear with a ski helmet.
WorkSafeBC has published a new safety bulletin, Hearing protection for heli-ski guides. The safety bulletin reviews methods for selecting the most-effective hearing protection that’s compatible with a guide’s ski helmet, the Regulation requirements and other related resources.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
